Community invited to explore Marcy Gulch Wastewater Treatment Plant at open house May 21

Ever wondered what happens after you flush the toilet or drain your sink? Highlands Ranch Water is opening its doors to answer that question and more at an upcoming Open House at our Marcy Gulch Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 21 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The community is invited to get a behind-the-scenes look at an essential and often overlooked public service.
This free event offers a rare opportunity to tour the facility that treats more than 6.5 million gallons of wastewater each day, safeguarding public health and protecting local waterways.
Visitors will have the chance to take a guided tour of the plant, walking you through the treatment process from start to finish. You will see first-hand how wastewater is cleaned, recycled and safely returned to the environment.
“Most people don’t think about wastewater until something goes wrong,” said Director of Water and Wastewater Operations Peter Bong. “This open house is a chance to connect with our community, show the incredible work happening every day, and highlight why reliable water services matter to everyone.”
The open house is designed to be both educational and engaging. Did you know wastewater treatment uses a mix of biology, chemistry and engineering, or that flushable wipes really aren’t flushable? Whether you’re curious about science, interested in sustainability, or just looking for a unique experience, there’s something for everyone.
The open house takes place outside. Comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Some areas may have limited accessibility due to the industrial nature of the facility.
The Marcy Gulch Wastewater Treatment Plant is located at 8700 US Hwy 85, Highlands Ranch 80126. Signs will direct visitors where to park when they arrive. For more information, email contactus@hrwater.org or call 303-791-0430.
