Make every drop count: Local conservation efforts help community save water

With water conservation top of mind during an unusually dry winter, Highlands Ranch Water is partnering with the nonprofit Resource Central to help residents take simple steps toward a more waterwise Colorado. By empowering residents to take practical steps at home, Resource Central’s programs have helped save more than two billion gallons of water across Colorado.

“Our partnership with Resource Central helps residents conserve water in their landscape, which can account for up to 50% of a single-family home’s annual water use,” said Paige McFarland, water efficiency coordinator for Highlands Ranch Water. “By inspiring people to live more sustainably through our conservation programs, small changes can add up to meaningful water savings.”

This year, Highlands Ranch Water customers can benefit from Resource Central programs designed to help reduce outdoor water use with easy, approachable options. Customers can sign up for Garden In A Box kits and Slow the Flow sprinkler evaluations.

Garden In A Box makes it easy to plant a colorful, pollinator-friendly garden that uses 60% less water than traditional grass lawns. Professionally designed for Colorado’s climate, each kit includes waterwise perennial plants, a plant by number layout, and seasonal care instructions. Highlands Ranch Water customers can explore the 2026 Garden In A Box collection online at ResourceCentral.org/Gardens and receive a $25 discount on gardens

Slow the Flow sprinkler evaluations have helped 99% of participants improve irrigation efficiency and reduce outdoor water waste; an estimated 465,000 gallons of water was saved by Highlands Ranch Water customers in 2025 alone from Slow the Flow audits. Thanks to this partnership, Highlands Ranch Water customers can receive a free sprinkler evaluation. Resource Central’s trained technicians provide on-site assessments, recommend adjustments, and create customized watering schedules. Sign up for the interest list now, with free appointments starting in June at ResourceCentral.org/Sprinklers.
